Most of the largest and most successful visual effects companies maintain internal training departments. Animation and Effects is simply too large and complex of a subject matter to make the assumption that all incoming artists have all necessary training and experience to do the jobs expected of them.
Training programs and DVD tutorials are often useful, but usually don't exist within the context of production or pipeline. Therefore, they have a tendency to suggest workflows that don't stand up to actual production.
Through FIE, Brad can set up training sessions and create custom training materials that fill this need without having to set up an internal training department. A set of suggested/Generic training sessions and topics is listed on this page. Custom training sessions and materials are viable. Contact us to inquire further.
Get your gamma and your gamut straight, once and for all.
Understand why everyone seems to disagree as to what "linear" is.
Get control over your LUTs.
Wrap it all up and actually USE it, rather than be a victim of it.
Understand how to interact with a digital intermediate house.
Life would be much easier without lens distortion. Unfortunately, there are very few pinhole cameras out there.
Much as a facility needs to practice, "color management" throughout the vfx process to be sucessful, "lens distortion managment" is critical to quality visual effects.
Looking at a plate and saying "doesn't look distorted" is not enough to make elements track.
Lens distortion managment stretches over multiple deparments and roles throughout the production pipeline. A good solid understanding amongst your teams as to the problem, and their role, is critical to smooth operation.
Motion Builder is a very powerful and often misunderstood tool for motion capture and character animation. It doesn't "just work" out of the box. Training materials about how to make it work in actual production are scarce.
I've set up Motion Builder for high volume animation production under multiple scenarios and have trained animation teams in its use on multiple occasions.
Working with your technical team and animators, I can train a useful Motion Builder team quickly and effectively.
Previs is an important part of production and is a discipline in and of itself. Its far more than just "clunky fast animation."
Time and time again, I see animators thrown into previs without training. Its not fair to the animator, and it pretty much guarantees your previs will not do what its supposed to do. This can absolutely kill a project's ability to meet deadlines and budgets.
I can train artists in the discipline and logistics of the craft and build an effective in house previs team.
Prior to pursuing FIE fulltime, I served as the Staff Technical Director for Pixel Liberation Front (PLF), one of the most respected and experienced Previs houses in the world. Besides being responsible for pipeline and RnD, I also served as a Previs Artist and as a Previs Lead Aritst on multiple high profile projects including:
Furthermore, the pipelines and systems I developed for PLF are the backbone of most projects that have been undertaken since my departure. I was responsible for the training of various new artists during my time with PLF and training previs artists has a special place in my heart.
